Blueberry Buttercream Frosting Recipe

Did I just say “Blueberries Desserts”? Yes, I did!

Fresh blueberries are such an amazing way to add a burst of flavour and that vibrant pop of colour to any baked product or some luscious and delicious frosting.

Here, I have the Best Blueberry Frosting for you, which you can pair with almost any cake, cupcake, or dessert—or enjoy a spoonful of it!

As a baker, blueberries are one of my favourite fruits during the season.

But if I go back and think about it, as a kid, I had never heard of them. Blueberries have only recently become popular in India, despite being common in Europe and America for many years. It’s been 10–15 years, I guess.

When I started my journey as a baker, trying out new recipes with blueberries was a bit intimidating as only a few people had heard about them, and trying to make the perfect buttercream frosting with them that suits the Indian palate was a task. But, as they say, all good things take time and patience!

So, today I have the Best Blueberry Frosting for you guys, made using fresh blueberries, white couverture chocolate, unsalted butter, icing sugar, and milk! That’s it!

Why You’ll love this Blueberry frosting!

  • Blueberries: These exotic berries are rich in antioxidants and have many health benefits. And who doesn’t want the desserts to be healthy :p!
  • Texture: Unlike the traditional buttercream frostings, this frosting is smooth and silky, with a melt-in-your-mouth texture. Also, it is not at all gritty!
  • Stability: This frosting is so stable that you won’t make buttercreams any other way. It will sit well at room temperature for almost an hour in the summer.
  • It adds a Burst of flavour: The white chocolate and the blueberries have given this frosting a subtle milky and fruity flavour. It goes well with so many desserts.

Important Ingredients Used In Blueberry Buttercream Frosting

  • White couverture: Using white couverture chocolate in this recipe gives it a rich, milky flavour along with stability.
  • Fresh blueberries: The fresh berries puree is giving a vibrant colour and rich fruity flavour to the frosting. It will also give us small pigments of blueberries in the frosting, which I personally love to see!
  • Milk: When mixed with icing sugar, milk helps achieve a smooth, grit-free buttercream.
  • Salt & Vanilla bean paste: Both these ingredients help elevate the overall flavour of the frosting.

How To Make Blueberry Buttercream Frosting

  • Melt the chocolate: In a bowl, take chopped white couverture chocolate and melt it in the microwave at intervals of 25–30 seconds. Then keep it aside and let it cool.
  • Cream the butter: Place the softened, unsalted butter in a large bowl. With the help of an electric beater, cream the butter until it turns pale and super fluffy.
  • Mix icing sugar & milk: In a small bowl, mix sifted icing sugar and milk together until the sugar dissolves completely. This trick will help us achieve grit-free buttercream.
  • Make the buttercream: Once the sugar has completely dissolved, we’ll add it to the creamed unsalted butter. Using a spatula, mix together to form a smooth buttercream. This process may take some time and initially look separated, but it will come together, so don’t give up!
  • Add melted white couverture: Once the buttercream looks smooth and silky, it’s the perfect time to add white chocolate and mix.
  • Add salt & vanilla bean paste: Simply add both ingredients to the frosting and mix using a spatula.
  • Add blueberry puree: For the puree, just blend some fresh blueberries, lemon juice and a pinch of salt in a blender and add it to the frosting.
  • Add blueberry essence: Lastly, add a few drops of blueberry essence to the frosting and give it a nice mix. I am using Fab’s Blueberry essence for this recipe.

Our frosting is now ready! Feel free to pipe, spread, or make swirls out of it like any other frosting!

Chef Tips For The Recipe

  • Melt white chocolate correctly: Whenever using a microwave to melt the chocolate, make sure to melt it at intervals of 25–30 seconds, as keeping it in the microwave for 1 minute straight will burn it.
  • Use room temperature butter & milk: Make sure to use room temperature milk for mixing and room temperature butter for the creaming process rather than cold or warm butter, as we want to trap as much air as possible.
  • Sift icing sugar: Make sure to sift the icing sugar before using, as it has many lumps.
  • Let the chocolate cool down: After you melt the chocolate, make sure to let it cool, as adding just-out-of the oven melted chocolate will melt the butter.

How To Store Blueberry Buttercream Frosting

Keep the blueberry buttercream frosting in an airtight container after use. It can be stored for up to a week in the refrigerator and up to a month in the freezer.

Can I use frozen blueberries instead of fresh ones?

Yes, you can use frozen blueberries, but make sure to thaw them before you puree.

Can I use any other berry for this recipe?

Yes, you can make this frosting with any other seasonal berry by following the same steps.

Can we replace unsalted butter with salted butter?

No, for buttercream frostings, only unsalted butter should be used, as salted butter will give the frosting a very salty flavour.
